10 Tips For Women-Owned Businesses

1. Don’t underestimate the power of getting your intentions “out there.” - As the old adage proves true, so much of business comes back to whom we know.

By putting your intentions “out there,” the relationships you build with people and institutions will assist you along the way and allow you to make an impact as big or small as you choose.

2. Ask for help. - Don’t be afraid to seek assistance from others. Let go of your pride; isolating yourself in times of adversity is one of the worst things that you can do.

3. Know your industry, inside and out. - You really need to think of what business you’re in and with whom you’re hoping to conduct it. You then need to prepare a business plan with contingencies for the unexpected. It’s important that this plan is implemented consistently. Keep your focus. Then, set achievable long-term and short-term goals for yourself.

4. Be open to feedback, and be honest with yourself. - A lot of people will tell you your “baby” is ugly. Pay attention, and resist the urge to be defensive. What they say about your business matters. Take notes. Look for the common themes and assess whether your target market sees it the same way.

5. Filtering advice is bias. - You’ll get loads of contradictory advice and loads of feedback you don’t really agree with. You have to avoid cherry picking out only the bits of advice you like. You’re deluding yourself. Recognize that this tendency to hear only opinions that confirm your original hypothesis is a form of bias.

6. Be proactive, not reactive. - Life is full of distractions that make it harder to focus during rough times. Personal life, work, health concerns, business, family, children, etc. It all demands your attention. You must avoid the tendency to settle into rote practices with regard to your business. Try to set aside quiet time to contemplate your initial focus (See No. 3 above) and to reinforce your reasons for certain goals. You must keep moving forward proactive way and not get into simply reacting.

7. Be prepared. - Now that you are your own boss, it’s your job to be ready for anything your business will encounter. You might even have employees now whose families rely on your acumen. The entrepreneurial road is interesting and uncertain. Be prepared for a scary roller coaster ride.

8. Get knocked down, get up wiser. - Perseverance is priceless. You are allowed to make mistakes, but be sure that you then learn from those mistakes and do better next time. Don’t let setbacks break you; let them demonstrate how strong you really are.

9. You don’t have to win, to win. - The connections and opportunities are there for you to grasp. Winning, while nice, is not essential to being successful. Maximizing the opportunity is.

10. Never give up. - This is your passion, your baby, and possibly your life’s purpose. Keep your eyes on the prize. Suck it up. Ride the tough wave. Refuse to quit.
